How to Shop for a great helmet.
How to shop for a great helmet? Finding the right helmet can be challenging. I’ve compiled a list of things that make a great helmet for me, and I’ve thrown in a few extras especially for smaller head sizes. Also, there are a lot of different types of helmets out there (Check them out here). This post is not focusing on a specific helmet type, it’s a guideline on features to look out for when choosing the right helmet for you.
1. The helmet needs to fit.
This is obvious, but before buying a helmet go and try it, make sure it fits, Most motorbike shops have assistants who can help you.
2. The lighter the better. (especially for smaller headsizes)
As a petite person, my neck can’t support a heavier helmet. Lighter helmets reduce additional pressure on the neck, especially if you ride a naked bike. Look out for carbon fiber helmets or junior helmets.
3. It has to have the right safety testing (DOT/SNELL/ ECE 22/05)
4. Having a Pinlock is a must, especially for cooler country climates.
5. A headset space built in
6. Shell size matters. (Especially for smaller headsizes)
7. Ventilation
Ventilation is also important when buying a helmet, as it makes the helmet more breathable. Most helmets have chin, forehead and scalp vents which you can usually close too. Keep a check on this.
8. Sun Visor
Sun visors are tinted visors, that are built into a helmet. They are one of those things that you don’t really notice until the sun is shining in your face and then your glad you have them
9. Does it have a Double D -ring safety fastener?
Double D ring safety fasteners are the safest fasteners available when it comes to helmets. In a crash, these are extra secure when keeping the helmet on your head. There is nothing high tech about them, but having this feature is definitely a plus when choosing a great helmet.
10. The Price
Helmets can be expensive, and most light adult helmet comes with a hefty price tag. So if you’re on a budget, finding one which meets the above but is at an affordable price is great value for money. Here is a list of my top 3 Junior helmets 2019.
